Corine “Doc” Williams DuBose Byrd was born in Tunica County on May 9, 1946, to Carrie Monday Williams and the late James Cleveland Williams. She confessed a belief in Christ at age nine and was baptized and united with Holly Grove Baptist Church at Birdie. Later she joined St. Paul A. M. E. Church in Cambridge.
A graduate of Quitman County High School and salutatorian of her class, she attended Coahoma Junior College and later graduated from Boston State College. Doc earned numerous certificates and awards. She received many honors and tributes as a result of her work as a financial aide administrator and advisor at Salem State College and the University of Massachusetts at Boston, which earned her mention in “Who’s Who Among Black Americans.” Corine testified before the United States Senate and Congress, met with U. S. presidents, governors and lawmakers on behalf of the rights of our children to affordable educations.
In addition to her mother, Corine leaves to cherish loving memories her husband, David E. Byrd; children, Terrye Lenn Williams, Teetamu Dubose and Delena Erica Byrd; siblings, Dorothy “Doll Baby” Pearson of Chicago, James “Bubby” Williams and Wadean Reed of Memphis, Helen “Billy Jo” Walker of Maryland, Eloweve “Jap” McDaniels, Barbara “Bob” Pilgrim, Wendell “Skate” Williams, Money Louis Williams, Christeen “Time” Williams, Virginia Faye Moore-Sisco, James “Tankey” Bradley, Shirley Wiggins and Jimmie Tate, all of Boston and Cambridge; five grandchildren, Terryl, Trinika, Michael, Shawn, and Shayla; goddaughter, Traccy Wiggins, her former husband, Thomas DuBose; three brothers-in-law; two sisters-in-law; mother-in-law, Mrs. Jean Byrd and numerous other relatives and friends. A brother, Lonnie Scott preceded her in death.
