Walnut community was named for Walnut Bayou which had huge black walnut trees growing on its banks. As late as 1902, water stood in this bayou all the year. At the present a big percent of this land is cleared and is in cultivation.
This land is very rich and productive. Large and small plantations dot the country side with lovely homes and prosperous families. There is a splendid school which is a credit to any community. This coupled with the religious activities has developed a high type of citizen.
Mr. Shotwell is perhaps the oldest settler. Mr. J.H. Jennings was one of the older supervisors as well as Mr. J.H. Manning. Mr. J.H. Carter was also an early supervisor from Beat 4. The Dickey brothers, John, Jeff, Frank, and Will Ed were among the first citizens. Two brothers, Nash and Butch Pearson were among the earliest settlers also.
