Farmline: Volume 7, Issue 10, published by The Service, 1986, has a great article on pages 3 and 4 about how the agricultural decline in exports has hit Quitman County and other counties in the Delta and the Corn Belt states really hard and has had a negative impact on both farms and rural communities.
In Quitman County many of the businesses depend on the farm economy. Banks who loan money to farmers, businesses that sell farm equipment, grocery stores that serve the rural community are all hard hit economically.
Quitman County is listed as one of the 20 most export-dependent counties in the Delta.
